About Our Company

Meet The Owners

As an educator David Hammond has been involved in the student travel industry for over 45 years. As a theater teacher David often sought ways to get his students “out of the classroom” and into a real-world learning environment. Having been a student travel agent for over 45 years, David saw firsthand the value of involving his students in the educational opportunities that happen beyond the classroom and community.

Beyond The Classroom Tour & Travel grew from the simple principal of putting people first and developing a relationship to fulfill their travel goals. David values providing an authentic educational experience, offering the director and parents peace-of-mind travel, keeping the curriculum objectives and budget goals in the forefront, and personally providing a customer focused tour director to bring the mobile classroom to life! David will be there to support each group before they travel, while they are on their tour and when they return home. BTC wants to be the travel company that truly helps facilitate your vision for your students Beyond The Classroom.

David Hammond

David graduated from Otterbein College with a BA in Theatre in 1974 and accepted a position with Mount Gilead High School. He began building a theatre program, upgrading it from a Junior/Senior play system to presenting three major productions open to the entire school, student directed workshop productions, and an annual New York City theatre tour. In fall of 1978, David met with Lloyd Meeker, President of Field Studies Center in NYC and, in addition to teaching, became an independent sales representative for their company.

In 1979, David left Mount Gilead to become the Designer/Technical Director for Players Theatre of Columbus. In 1982, he became Director of Theatre at Upper Arlington High School and Supervisor of the Performing Arts Facility, where he remained until retiring from his teaching career in 2004. During his years at UA, David received his Master’s Degree in Theatre Education from The Ohio State University (1984), was on the Ohio State Thespian Board, and was a member of the Ohio Theatre Alliance. In 1992 David organized the first Ohio Youth Chorale Concert at Carnegie Hall and has continued to work on the prestigious Carnegie Hall Music Festivals with the National Youth Choirs and the the National Band and Orchestra Festival.

Retiring from Upper Arlington allowed David the opportunity to begin traveling to various theatre and music conferences for Field Studies Center, including but not limited to SETC (Southeast Theatre Conference) TETA (Texas Educational Theatre Association), Florida Thespian Conference (the largest in the country) EDTA National Conference) and various state music conferences, including OMEA (Ohio Music Educators Association).
